Overview of Family Therapy for Schizophrenia

Abstract
Until 1960s, psychoanalytic-based family therapy were mainstream treatment modality under the view of family members contribute the development of schizophrenia. But the discovery of antipsychotic medication, the deinstitutionalization movement,
and
organization of family support groups brought a radical change to highlight a biologically based stress-diathesis model in stead of a psychological model in family therapy for schizophrenia. Those factors resulted in the shift toward viewing
family
members as important resource in the management and social rehabilitation of schizophrenic patients. In 1980s. a behavioral and psychoeducational based family therapy were developed and the results of many controlled and long-term outcome studies
have
been proved their effectiveness compared to a traditional therapy. The common element of family therapy most frequently used in differing combinations are psychoeducation. Behavioral problem solving, family support, and crisis management. With
few
exception, the results of family therapy for schizophrenia have been reported success for both patients and family members such as lower relapse rate, improve socia' function, and reduce family burden. Psychoeducational and behavioral family
therapy are
most common and widely used but psychodynamic family approach did not produce superior outcomes when compared with standard care.
